Later M P Joseph joined the UN and worked for nearly 20 years in the International Labour Organization ILO on children’s education and ending child labour in India and abroad. During this stint of about a decade in India, he travelled extensively in the most backward villages and tehsils of UP, Bihar, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Assam, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka etc. that has given him a very close understanding of rural India particularly North India.
He was ILO’s Chief Technical Advisor in Cambodia for 7 years and headed the large ILO office in Cambodia. He has worked closely with Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Sathyarthi and others in these initiatives.
On return from the ILO after 20 years, Joseph took over as Advisor to Government (Labour Reforms, Industrial Relations), in the Rank of Additional Chief Secretary, Kerala and Executive Vice Chairman of Bhavanam Foundation Kerala a public sector non-profit Company fully owned by the Government of Kerala.
He is the author of ‘My Driver Tulong and Other Tall Tales from a Post Pol Pot Contemporary Cambodia’ a fictional travelogue set in Cambodia based loosely upon his time there, drawing out clearly the thousands of years of links between Cambodia, which is the Kamboja Desa of the Puranas and India.This is the first time an Indian author has ever ventured to set a novel in Cambodia. Dr. Sashi Throor released the book in New Delhi.
His Chapter on Syrian Christians in Kerala in the prestigious Routledge Publication, ‘Eastern Christianity and Politics in the Twentieth Century’ is a brilliant analysis of the beginnings, growth and the future of the Syrian Christians in Kerala.
Joseph is writing his next book, ‘Charitrathinoru Driksakshi’ or ‘A Witness to History’ an autobiographical work that would dwell on his interactions with senior leaders both living and dead in the political, social, administrative, art and literary fields such as Sri. K Karunakaran, Sri. A K Antony, Sri. K M Mani etc. that he had the occasion to meet and interact during his long career in India and abroad.
He is a much sought-after speaker in English and Malayalam and writes in English and Malayalam. Since the lock down M P Joseph is a much sought-after speaker on Webinars and Zoom etc. on a variety of topics of current interest. His articles in the Malayala Manorama on May Day and in The Week has attracted much thought and attention.
He has also published articles in Malayala Manorama, Mathrubhumi, Kala Kaumudi, the Week etc.
Joseph is a double post graduate, with a Masters in HRD from the Manchester University, Manchester, UK and a Masters in Solid State Physics from the Cochin University of Science and Technology, CUSAT, Kochi.
He speaks Hindi like a native and delivers speeches in Hindi.Joseph also knows and speaks Tamil, Telugu, and a smattering of French and Khmer.
