Pedagogy in School of Architecture and School of Interior Design

The School of Architecture opens pathways to experiential learning rather than formulas for design. Our academic programme creates architecture professionals to address conceptual conundrums, design and engineering challenges. The program also seeks to create an awareness of traditional art forms and hand skills, allied creative fields, social and environmental responsibility.

A student centred approach that facilitates learning and innovative approaches to effective teaching are the hallmarks of the School of Architecture and the School of Interior Design. Education is not just confined to classrooms but consists of a set of varied interrelated parts- theory, design studio work, case studies, field visit, workshops, architecture tours, talks and interactions with authors, designers, architects and artists.

Some of the essential aspects of the pedagogy in School of Architecture and the School of Interior Design include the following:

Fostering creativity – through specific programmes and activities conducted as part of the curriculum and beyond.

Collaboration – Our program also features an ongoing collaborative learning engagement with the University of Valladolid, a leading and historic Spanish university through exchange programs, opportunities for your students to pursue  higher studies and residency programmes.

Extensive use of case studies as a pedagogy for quality architectural education.

24 x 7 studios – an advantageous fall out of a fully residential campus

Architectural visits and tours leading to documentation and subsequently being developed into architectural books. The Schools have already published a book titled ‘ Synagogues of Kerala’ and co-published ‘Wooden Architecture of Kerala’ written by the famous architect Miki Desai.

Workshops – paint, bamboo and clay workshops.

In-house design and innovation labs – where students get to explore design potentialities and innovate with carpentry, painting, lithography, weaving, pottery, photography, ceramic and terracotta.

Interaction with leading artists, architects and authors.

Incorporation of reading– As a part of their curriculum, students are exposed to  books and watch films related to architecture.

Camps at our city campus –  Frequent camps are held at our campus in Trivandrum where students interact with leading architects and are exposed to environmentally sustainable design projects in the city.
