Management Education: Key Challenges Faced By Educational Institutions In Filling Up Their Seats In Kerala

Introduction

The rapid advancement in the Educational sector in the country has influenced the student community that has imparted tremendous insights to students. The student community is gaining adequate knowledge from their schooling with reference to the choice of their higher studies and also towards building up of their career. Management Education as a concept is having prime importance in the current business perceptive because of which Educational Institutions are having better prospects in the state of Kerala. At the same time, Management Institutions in the state are facing difficulty in getting the adequate number of students in filling-up their seats. The recent phenomenon reflects upon the out flow of students opting for Higher Educational programs outside the country, which has an adverse impact to the colleges functioning with in the State as well as in the Country. So, this study is mainly focusing on identifying the factors affecting the Management of Educational Institutions in filling up their seats in the state called as Kerala.

Kerala as a state is considered to be one of the most literate states in the country. The student community has a great expectation upon their higher educational requirement for having better prospects in life. Though Kerala is a very small state compared to others in the country, the state is blessed with various resources like population, education, health, tourism and infrastructure.

As considered to be a state of literacy, the Government of Kerala has given much priority in promoting higher educational qualification in the state. The state has a number of Universities that offer various undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in different fields such as arts, science, engineering, technology, medicine, and management. The University of Kerala is

one of the oldest universities in India and offers courses in various fields such as arts, science, and technology.

Total No. of Government Universities is 16. There is only one Central University. State Universities are 15. Total No. of Deemed Universities is 3.

There are 253 Management Colleges in Kerala offering various UG & PG programs like BBA, BBM, MBA & PGDM. 

 

Lack of Job Prospects

The Higher Education Sector in the state is falling short of bringing adequate job opportunities for the young bloods.

The concept of Entrepreneurship has tremendous scope for students who wish to pursue as specialization with the Management Education Programs like BBA & MBA in the State, but the perception on job security of the aspirant and their family has been a concern for Institutions.

The FDI in the state is not adequate to serve the purpose of meeting the job demand being generated every year.

The Government funding in encouraging young aspirants to indulge into start-ups also needs to be uplifted.

 

Educational Policy

As per the current Educational Policy of the State Government, they have proposed for a new scheme in the 2021-22 budget called as “Karmachari” that will enable students to earn while studying which has not yet got implemented.

The State Government have delayed the implementation of National Educational Policy (NEP) 2020 for the past three years.

The current Educational Policy in offering New Programs and Additional Seats to various Universities and Business Schools in Kerala has shown a wide gap in student intake as well as their pass percentage.

The syllabus revision for various Universities and Business Schools in Kerala has not been happening for a longer period of time.

Results

  • The Educational Institutions in the state has to redesign the curriculum, introduce new programs, eliminate the undemanding programs and more over merge two or more programs. It helps the institutions to develop the business under the educational sector.
  • The Business Schools in the state has to encourage student participation by conducting job Fairs and Skill Development Programs, which can help to bridge the gap of lack of employment.
  • Syllabus revision has to happen on a regular basis for the various management programs like BBA & MBA, to cater demand for getting admissions in that particular University or Institution.
  • All the Business Schools in Kerala has to conduct various awareness programs like Workshops and Seminars for the BBA & MBA programs, which would help in enhancing the skill of students for better prospectus and ultimately result in getting quality students.
  • The Government has to provide better awareness about the National Educational Policy 2020 (NEP) as well as the proposed scheme “Karmachari” to support students in undergoing their higher education in the State.
  • The failure rate of aspirants can be managed by appointing qualified and experienced faculty members in consensus with the Regulatory Commission of the Country.

Conclusion

There is a lot of potential for Management Education Programs like BBA, BBM, MBA & PGDM in the State. The key challenges faced by Management Educational Institutions or Business Schools in filling up their seats in the state can be addressed with the help of the above said strategies. Kerala being a state which is well known for its Literacy, the role of Educational Institution is very vital in imparting quality education for the student community at large.
